A tradition of geography, scientific research and work with young talents in Serbia.
More than a century of geographical science
The first professional teaching and scientific geographical institution in Serbia was established in 1893.
That year, after defending his doctoral thesis – Das karstphänomen, in Vienna, Jovan Cvijić founded the Geographical Institute at the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Great School, which in 1905 grew into the University of Belgrade.
Since its inception, the Geographical Institute, the forerunner of the current Faculty of Geography, has become the initiator of the development of geography and the bearer of organized scientific research in various parts of the Balkan Peninsula, especially in the field of studying settlements, population and geomorphology.
Shortly thereafter, in 1910, the Serbian Geographical Society was founded, the first association of geographers in the Balkans.
Geographical Institute
Jovan Cvijić founded the Geographical Institute at the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Great School.
University of Belgrade
The Great School grew into the University of Belgrade.
Serbian Geographical Society
The Serbian Geographical Society was founded as the first association of geographers in the Balkans.
Regional Center for Young Talents “Nikola Tesla” Belgrade
The Regional Center for Young Talents “Nikola Tesla” Belgrade has been implementing program activities with young scientists for thirty years.
